Stars & Stripes The Patriotics
collage, canvas on wood. / 48" x 36" / 2009
details :
Inspired by the song "Circus" by Britney Spears.
A heavily thematically driven piece that once again features stars Marilyn Monroe, Britney Spears and Judy Garland (see The Hollywood K.O.); only this time set against a multi-tiered red and white (and black and white) striped platform. The metaphor of the women as stars repeats throughout, further driving the title home, in addition to the actual stars that litter the piece as well. Now looking more like a reverse American flag than anything else, it was originally supposed to be a three-ring circus of sorts, but I got diverted by the strength of the red and white stripes (these at first represented the colors of a circus tent). After nailing the smaller Marilyn piece to the larger one and seeing the effect the stars had against the stripes, the title and meaning of the piece became apparent. Set to the music of one, the piece would once again celebrate these women, but under a different light. A patriotic fever, if you will. Welcome to the Circus starring Marilyn, Britney and Judy.
